Zeus
Zeus is an 11 year-old labrador retriever / pit bull cross that has been coming to South Hyland since he was adopted from the Humane Society in early 1994. The Benson family adopted him when he was approximately a year old. At the time of his adoption, Zeus was not using his back left leg due to a torn ligament in his knee. The Benson's had the knee surgically repaired for him. A couple of years later Zeus had surgery on his other knee to repair a torn ligament he sustained while playing ball. Zeus recovered well from his surgeries, but has recently developed some arthritis in his knees. He still enjoys playing with his toys both inside and outside the house. Within the past few years, Zeus has developed liver abnormalities that are consistent with a disease called Cushing's disease. He is currently on medication to help protect his liver, as well as medication to help with arthritis in his knees. In his spare time, Zeus enjoys seeking out as much attention as he can get from the Benson's, as well as taking naps on the furniture and under blankets.
In August of this year Zeus was diagnosed with a serious cancer called malignant histiocytosis. He is currently being treated with chemotherapy at the University of Minnesota in an attempt to slow the progression of his cancer. Zeus is a wonderful dog, and we are fortunate to know and work with him. We look forward to seeing him and his owner at the clinic for his periodic rechecks. Zeus seems to enjoy all the attention he gets during his visits to the clinic, except for the times he has to have his nails trimmed. Zeus reportedly is enjoying the arrival of winter, as he loves to play in the snow.
