Veterinarians
Dr. Nikki Burk attended Iowa State University, then the University of Minnesota where she received a B.S. degree in Veterinary Science. She received her DVM Degree from there in 2001. As an undergraduate and as a veterinary student, Dr. Burk excelled academically. During her undergraduate years, she was involved in the honors program, was on the dean’s list, and was part of Iowa State’s Presidential Leadership group. While in veterinary school, she was inducted into Phi Zeta Kappa (Veterinary Medical Honors Society) and received the World Animal Care Foundation Award.
Dr. Burk is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, and the American Veterinary Dental Society. She became co-owner of South Hyland Pet Hospital in 2004. Dr. Burk maintains membership in the James O. Hansen Academy, by completion of at least five times the state requirement for continuing education. Her passion for learning has allowed her to develop professional interests in addition to canine and feline medicine and surgery, such as advanced pet dentistry, small exotic pet medicine, laser surgery and animal rehabilitation. She accepts dental referrals from other local veterinarians and teaches dentistry laboratories at the University of Minnesota for vet students and other veterinarians. She enjoys mentoring veterinary students.
Dr. Burk and her husband, Joe, and sons Izaak and Ethan share their home with two pugs, Winnie and Waldo. Her hobbies include traveling, skiing and hiking.
